Official: US Senate not to lift sanctions from Deripaska’s firms

MOSCOW, Jan 14 (PRIME) -- The U.S. Senate will not support lifting of the sanctions against companies of Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska, Senator Mark Warner told channel CNN in an interview broadcast on Monday.

“I'm alarmed by this administration's attempt to lift sanctions on a Russian oligarch with links to Putin and Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. We should be sending a message that interfering with our elections will not be tolerated,” Warner said in his Twitter blog after the interview.

The official said that Deripaska will retain indirect control over aluminum company RUSAL despite reducing the stake to 40–45% because he had founded the company and has a loyal executive team.

On December 19, 2018, the Department of the Treasury said it would lift the sanctions imposed on En+ Group and EuroSibEnergo, as well as RUSAL in 30 days, but will retain sanctions against Deripaska personally.

In April, 2018, the U.S. imposed sanctions against 38 Russian tycoons, officials and companies including Deripaska and his assets.
